AIADMK protests against move to shift bus stand in Kumbakonam

Cadres of the AIADMK Thanjavur East District staged a protest near Gandhi Park in Kumbakonam on Saturday condemning the move to establish a new bus stand on the bypass in the town. They urged the Corporation to focus on providing basic amenities to residents.

Former Minister R. Kamaraj, who led the protest, alleged that the decision to shift the existing bus stand was driven purely by vested interests. He recalled that AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami had declared the delta districts as a protected agricultural zone and accused the government of destroying fertile agricultural land for commercial purposes, despite the availability of several dry land parcels around Kumbakonam.

Highlighting the importance of the existing bus stand, Mr. Kamaraj said it was conveniently located for devotees visiting the temple town, besides being close to colleges, the Mahamaham tank, and the railway station. He pointed out that when the bus stand was constructed in 1992, it had been designed to accommodate the operation of about 1,000 buses.

He demanded the withdrawal of the proposal to establish a new bus stand. Thanjavur East District Secretary R.K. Bharathi Mohan and other party functionaries participated.
