Former MLC and reception committee president K. S. Laxman Rao has called upon farmers, students and the general public to make the agricultural exhibition, seminars and cultural programmes a success, being organised in connection with the All India Kisan Sabha National Council meetings in Guntur.
Addressing a press conference at the Rythu Sangham district office in Brodipet here on Tuesday, Mr. Laxman Rao said the National Council meetings would be held from January 30 to February 1 at the TTD Kalyana Mandapam. He said a four-day agricultural exhibition, along with seminars on 14 themes and cultural programmes, would commence on January 29 at Sri Venkateswara Vignana Mandir.
He said agriculture was facing a severe crisis, with farmers not receiving remunerative prices for their produce and several policy-related challenges emerging. All these issues would be discussed in detail during the meetings, he added.
AP Rythu Sangham State secretary K. Prabhakar Reddy said the demand for Minimum Support Price, as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission, would be one of the key issues. He alleged that despite assurances given earlier by both UPA and NDA governments, no concrete steps had been taken so far. He also cautioned that US tariffs and pressure to allow duty-free imports could seriously harm Indian agriculture, as already witnessed in the aqua sector.
