Ahead of local body elections, the Telugu Desam Party’s Scheduled Caste (SC) Cell on Monday urged the government to reserve Mayor seat of Srikakulam Municipal Corporation to SC community, claiming that it was not allocated for them in the last 170 years of history of the civic body.
Along with representatives of various Dalit organisations, SC Cell’s State general secretary S. Venkata Ramana submitted a memorandum to the civic body Commissioner G. Shravan Kumar and asked him to convey to the government about the historical neglect to the SCs in local governance.
Stating that Srikakulam was one of the oldest municipalities of India, he said dominant sections had never allowed SCs to get either chairman or mayor post. “The government should allocate at least 15% of divisions for SCs and 7% to STs so that Dalits and tribal leaders have an opportunity to become corporators in ensuing elections.
