The Kirlampudi police in Kakinada district on Monday served a notice to former Irrigation Minister and senior YSRCP leader Ambati Rambabu in Guntur, directing him to appear before them in connection with a case registered against him for allegedly obstructing police officials from discharging their duties during the last rites of Kapu leader Mudragada Padmanabham on July 15.

The Kakinada SP office confirmed to The Hindu that “A notice under section 35 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), formerly Sectio 41 A of the Cr.PC, has been served on Mr. Rambabu, directing him to appear before the Kirlampudi police on October 8 in connection with a case registered against him on July 16.”

The mortal remains of Kapu leader Mudragada Padmanabham Reddy (73) were laid to rest under a mango tree at his residence at Kirlampudi village in Kakinada district.

On July 16, Armed Reserve Sub-Inspector V. Appala Raju lodged a complaint alleging that Mr. Rambabu had obstructed him from discharging his duty during the last rites of Mr. Padmanabham.

Mr. Rambabu and his aides had allegedly attempted to prevent police personnel on duty from performing the last rites with State Honours, claiming that such a honour was against the wish of Mr. Padmanabham.

Mr. Padmanabham died on July 14 after a prolonged illness at a private hospital in Hyderabad.
