A 10-session art therapy exercise was conducted recently for a batch of elementary class students at Swami Dayananda Vidyalaya, Manjakudi, in Tiruvarur district. The objective was to improve the concentration of students in the classroom.
The exercise, conceived by Shruti Aravind, a class XI student of Sishya in Chennai, and tested at Swabodhini, a Chennai-based institution for special children, was conducted at Swami Dayananda Vidyalaya, Manjakudi. A total of 100 students in class 4 and 5 participated in the exercise conducted by school teachers twice a week.
A formal evaluation report of five socio-emotional domains – acceptance, non-judgment, patience, letting-go and trust – after the conclusion of the art therapy sessions, showed a marked shift among the students as they were more focused and less distracted and were free in expressing their creativity and settling into a calm and absorbed state of concentration, according to a Swami Dayananda Vidyalaya release.
