Minister for Social Welfare P. Geetha Jeevan handed over welfare assistance to the tune of ₹54.54 lakh to 206 differently abed beneficiaries in a function organised here on Tuesday to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Geetha said the differently abled persons had been nominated to all urban and rural local bodies to air the grievances of the physically challenged persons in the village panchayats, town panchayats, municipalities and the corporations. Moreover, additional union and division-level officers had been appointed to collect information about the physically challenged persons at their doorsteps and the welfare assistances being given to them.
“This measure will ensure the immediate disbursal of welfare assistance to the differently abled persons who are waiting long for the aid from the government. While the Union Government has allocated ₹300 crore for the entire country for implementing welfare schemes for the differently-abled persons, the Tamil Nadu government has earmarked ₹1,852 crore. It shows the State Government’s real interest in uplifting the living of the physically challenged, who should make use of it to start their livelihood and the business ventures,” Ms. Geetha said.
