The Thanjavur District Railway Users’ Association has sought a daytime train service connecting Kumbakonam and Rameswaram.
A resolution was passed at the 63rd annual general body meeting of the association chaired by its outgoing president M.M. Jameel at Kumbakonam on September 20, wherein it was observed that many migrants from Ramanathapuram district had settled in Thanjavur region. At present, the Chennai Egmore-Rameswaram Boat Mail was the only daily train which connected Thanjavur with Rameswaram. The train passed through Thanjavur and Kumbakonam at midnight.
Hence, a daytime intercity express between Rameswaram and Kumbakonam via Ramanathapuram and Tiruchi, was needed, Mr. Jameel added.
Urging the Southern Railway to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the formation of railway stations between Narasinganpet and Titte in Thanjavur district in February 2027 on a grand scale, it sought the approval of track doubling work between Thanjavur and Villupuram and complete the project from Thanjavur to Mayiladuthurai in first phase before the Mahamaham festival to be held in 2028.
At the AGM, M. Maran was elected as new president of the association for next three years. Other office-bearers elected were T. Saravanan as vice-president, A. Giri as secretary, S. Mohan as treasurer, R. Natarajkumar and R. Revanthkumar as joint secretaries, according to an association release.
