A 25-year-old auto-rickshaw driver succumbed to his injuries early Friday morning after his vehicle was struck by a speeding mini van near Thangachimadam on National Highway.
The victim has been identified as A. Praveenraj, a resident of Akkalmadam North, Pamban. The accident occurred on Thursday near the Kazhuguveli area on Rameswaram-Pamban highway.
According to police, Praveenraj was driving his auto-rickshaw towards Pamban after dropping off passengers in Rameswaram. At the same time, a van, driven by 41-year-old Gunasekaran of Paravur, was going in the opposite direction.
Police stated that the van was being driven at a high speed and in a rash manner when it collided head-on with the auto-rickshaw.
Praveenraj suffered severe head injuries and fractures to both legs, leaving him unconscious at the scene. Bystanders rushed him to the Rameswaram Government Hospital for initial first aid, after which he was transferred to the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Thangachimadam police have registered a case and further investigation is under way.
