The automated toll plaza at Brahmanampatti on the Melur-Karaikudi four-lane highway became operational on Sunday.
The four-lane highway project, commenced in March 2020 at a cost of ₹1,070 crore, covers 45.8 km. The work was delayed due to various reasons, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and the road has only recently come into use.
Though vehicles had been permitted on the road for the past few days, toll collection began on Sunday at the Brahmanampatti automated toll plaza near Tirupathur in Sivaganga district. National Highways Authority Project Director Muruga Perumal inaugurated the plaza.
The toll plaza operates through sensors. As vehicles arrive, the toll fee is displayed on a screen and collected through FASTag before allowing them to pass. The three central lanes operate automatically, while personnel have been deployed in the extreme left lanes on both sides to collect toll from vehicles without FASTag.
Basic facilities, including restrooms and an ambulance, have also been provided.
