Flames and smoke billowing from an automobile spare parts shop at Ramnagar in Coimbatore that caught fire on Friday evening.

Tension prevailed at Kattoor in Coimbatore after a three-storeyed automobile spare parts store was completely destroyed in a fire on Friday evening. No one was reported injured in the fire.
The police said that Mateshwari Automobiles on Raja Rathinam Street caught fire around 4.30 p.m. The Coimbatore south fire station received a call at 5 p.m., following which multiple teams were sent to the spot.
The store had a large range of automobile parts, including engine oils and batteries. Thick dark smoke billowing from the building was seen from different parts of the city.
Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar said the fire was brought under control within two and a half hours.
“The police evacuated residents from nearby buildings and electricity connection in the area was cut off. More than 10 fire tenders were used for the firefighting. The Coimbatore Corporation sent over 10 tankers to the spot. Various departments such as the Fire and Rescue Services, the police, Corporation, Revenue, Air Force and Navy jointly worked together to handle the emergency,” he said.
He said a detailed inquiry will be held to investigate the reasons for the fire and other aspects.
Coimbatore City Police Commissioner N. Kannan said police personnel headed by two Deputy Commissioners were at the spot and regulated the traffic, creating ways for fire tenders. Around 40 people residing in the nearby buildings in the area were evacuated and combustible materials were removed.
“The aerial ladder platform of the Fire and Rescue Services proved effective in fighting the fire from above. The foam-based fire tenders of the Air Force and Coimbatore airport also helped to bring the fire under control. Fire brigades led by the District Fire Officer handled the situation efficiently,” he said.
He added that a case will be registered with regard to the fire and a detailed investigation will be carried out.
Coimbatore M.P. Ganapathy P. Rajkumar and Corporation Mayor R. Ranganayaki were also at the spot. The fire was completely extinguished by 8 p.m.
