Police registered an FIR against northwest Delhi’s Mundka BJP MLA Gajender Drall and others under the SC/ST Act on Tuesday (September 15, 2026), five days after a Dalit party worker, Sunil Kumar, alleged that he was severely beaten and subjected to casteist slurs at a party office, police said.
The FIR was registered at the Kanjhawala police station. A senior police official said that the FIR included provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the Arms Act, and other relevant sections. A counter-complaint from Mr. Drall has also been received and is being investigated, the official said.
According to the FIR, the alleged assault took place on September 10 when Mr. Drall called Kanjhawala Mandal president Mr. Kumar to the party office in the evening on the pretext of discussing voter lists, and along with others workers, allegedly confined him and physically assaulted him through the night with pipes, belts and sticks. He also alleged that Mr. Drall and others used caste-related slurs against him, adding that he was allowed to go on the morning of September 11 and was threatened not to approach the police. Mr. Kumar, later, got admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and contacted the police.
Several videos of Mr. Kumar, shared by his friends and family, went viral, purportedly showing his body covered in bruises.
Party action
Meanwhile, Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra said on Tuesday that the state wing has taken cognisance of matter and referred it to the State disciplinary committee, adding that further action will be taken based on its report.
“After speaking with the concerned Member of Parliament and the District President, we issued a letter on Monday evening to the concerned MLA and the Mandal President, asking them to submit their explanation to the Delhi BJP Disciplinary Committee by 3:00 p.m. on September 16,” he said.
He added that while both parties are free to seek police or legal action, the party will take appropriate disciplinary action as per its organisational rules.
Political backlash
The incident has triggered a sharp political backlash from opposition Aam Aadmi Party and Congress.
AAP MLA from Kondli, Kuldeep Kumar, said that he accompanied Mr. Kumar to the DCP (Rohini) office at 10 a.m. on Tuesday and helped him register a case. “After nearly 6 hours of continuous struggle and demands for justice, Sunil Kumar’s FIR was finally registered,” he wrote on X.
He demanded the immediate arrest of the MLA and his associates, and security for the victim and his family, and a fair investigation.
Meanwhile, on September 13, Congress leader and former MP Udit Raj also visited the victim at the hospital along with members of the Dalit community.
Dr. Raj alleged that when around 50-60 people went to a police station on September 11 evening seeking registration of an FIR, the police did not act on the complaint. He accused the police of putting pressure on the victim not to pursue the case. In a post on X on Tuesday, Mr. Raj said, “After a four-day struggle, finally today, Sunil Kumar Valmiki’s FIR was registered at the Kanjhawala police station.”
