West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday (December 11, 2025) filed in the SIR enumeration form, according to officials at the State’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office.

Ms. Banerjee’s participation in the SIR process on the last day of the collection of filled-in enumeration forms was, however, not without controversy. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership on Friday (December 12) pointed out that at a rally in Krishnanagar on Thursday, the State’s Chief Minister had denied participating in the SIR process.

“West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again shown her instinct to mislead. She submitted her duly filled and signed Enumeration Form on the very last day, yet just hours earlier from a rally in Krishnanagar she falsely claimed she would not submit it at all,” BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya posted on social media.

Mr. Malviya also added that “after months of misinformation and attempts to confuse the voters of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee finally submitted her own SIR Enumeration Form on 11 December 2025 to remain a valid voter of West Bengal”.

Since the start of the SIR in West Bengal on November 4, Trinamool Congress chairperson has repeatedly said that she will not fill the SIR enumeration form till all the people of the state have filled in their forms.

Amidst reports that a booth level officer (BLO) visited her official residence in the first week of November, Ms. Banerjee took to social media to deny reports “by a section of media” that she had stepped out and received the form in person.

“A section of the media has written that I stepped out of my residence and received the enumeration form personally. This is entirely false and misleading,” she said, adding, “Until each and every one from Bengal fills up their form, I will not do so.” the Chief Minister had said on November 6. Since then, Ms. Banerjee has maintained her stand.

Officials at the CEO office clarified that as a serving chief minister, is already enrolled as a “marked elector”, a category that includes the Prime Minister, all chief ministers and other constitutional office-bearers.

West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said that SIR is a constitutional process concerned with national interest and national security, and something better was expected from her. “She does everything and then denies it. During the COVID-19 pandemic she had criticised the vaccine, but was among the first to take the vaccine,” Mr. Bhattacharya said.

Meanwhile, after five weeks of SIR process in West Bengal, the number of “uncollectable” enumeration forms on account of absent, shifted, duplicate and dead voters stands at 58 lakhs, which include around 24.2 lakh electors so far identified as dead. The draft electoral roll of the State which is headed for Assembly polls next year is expected on December 16.
