State BJP Farmers’ Wing president G.K. Nagarajan on Friday said that an awareness conference aimed at improving farmers’ livelihood would be held in Erode on January 5.

Addressing the media, he said Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan would participate in the event. The Minister would interact with farmers and traders at the turmeric auction market, listen to their grievances and visit turmeric cultivation fields. He would also hold discussions with farmers and those engaged in allied agricultural activities and deliberate on various issues affecting the sector.

Mr. Nagarajan said the Minister’s visit was not election-related but intended to assess why farmers continued to face problems despite their skills and experience. He added that the Minister would meet around 2,000 women to discuss self-reliance, challenges in starting enterprises and bank credit schemes, and would also take part in a Pongal celebration centred on millet-based foods.

The conference would be attended by BJP State president Nainar Nagendran, former State president K. Annamalai, National Mahila Morcha president and MLA Vanathi Srinivasan, actor-politician Khushbu and other senior leaders. An exhibition with 125 stalls showcasing agriculture, natural farming, value-added agricultural products, banks, NABARD and industrial promotion agencies would be inaugurated on January 4, he added.
