An unidentified gang, allegedly comprising Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers, reportedly attacked the house of Rajani Thekke Thayyil, a member of Vadakara block panchayat, on Sunday (December 28). An unexploded steel bomb was reportedly recovered from the premises of the house following the incident.

According to police sources, Rajani’s accidental casting of a vote in favour of a United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate had helped UDF assume power in Vadakara block panchayat. The election ended in a tie, with the LDF and the UDF securing seven seats each.

Rajani, a Rashtriya Janata Dal activist who contested the election under the banner of the LDF, had been placed under suspension for six months following the accidental casting of a vote in favour of UDF candidate Kottayil Radhakrishnan. On Sunday, the police registered a case as part of the continuing investigation into the incident.
