A resident of Ward 24 in Virudhunagar town has complained that a botched up animal birth control surgery has claimed the life of a stray dog on Sunday.
B. Sankari, 49, said the dead dog was one of the strays that she had been feeding on Pillaiyarkoil Street for a long time. Upon hearing the growling of the black dog on the morning of September 20, she came out of her house to find municipal workers catching the dog.
When she enquired, the workers told her that the animal was being taken for ABC surgery. “The dog was violently hurled into the vehicle,” she said.
Ms. Sankari said the male dog was back in the locality on the night of September 23 and looked weak. It back was swollen and bleeding. On Sunday night, the dog died.
She said a botched-up surgery and lack of post-surgery care had led to the death of the dog, which could not eat food properly. She sought action against the official concerned for the premature death of the dog. “Six months ago, when the municipal workers came, I helped them catch six of the stray dogs for injecting anti-rabies vaccine.”
The municipal Sanitary Officer said the identity of the dog that is said to have died needed to be verified whether it was taken for the ABC surgery or not. The surgeries in the town were being carried out at the Government Veterinary hospital and also at the municipality’s ABC centre under the guidance of an NGO since February.
Out of the 365 identified dogs, surgery had been done on 200 dogs, he added.
