Following complaints from local residents about alleged strangulation of street dogs at Arapalayam here recently, Madurai City Police have initiated action.

Nalini, president of People for Animals (PFA)-Tamil Nadu, said that six to seven minor boys were caught on CCTV while strangulating street dogs to death.

“The incident involved students ranging from class 4 to 9, who allegedly used cable wires to strangle the animals to death. The matter came to light after a few teachers in the area discovered the footage and the details of the cruelty,” she added.

They also learned that close to five dogs were killed in the incident and more than 20 dogs were reportedly found missing in the area, she alleged.

Ms. Nalini said that following the complaints, a Community Service Register (CSR) has been filed regarding the incident.

A swift action against those involved and proper awareness would help in reducing such crimes against animals, she added.
