Brothers killed in car accident near Thirupuvanam

In a lorry-car collision accident near Thirupuvanam here on Thursday, two brothers died on the spot. 

Police said, brothers Soundarapandi, 52 and Chandran, 48, natives of Mennanthi, Ramanathapuram, residing in Salem district, along with six of their family members, were on their way to attend a funeral in Ramanathapuram district. 

At Thattankulam near Thirupuvanam on Madurai-Rameswaram National Highway, the car driven by Soundarapandi collided with a truck moving in front of them.  

The truck driver had applied sudden brake to avoid hitting a bike. The car which was closely following the truck was unable to stop in time and slammed into the truck’s rear bumper. 

In this accident, Soundarapandi and Chandran died on the spot. Six other family members, who were injured, were rushed to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for treatment.  

As the medical team could not retrieve the mortal remains of the deceased from the damaged car, fire and rescue services personnel were deployed to remove the bodies, police added.  

Thirupuvanam police have registered a case and further investigation is under way.
