Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) in Erode district have been directed to register through the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) portal within 15 days, in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
In a press release, Collector S. Kandasamy said an institution or establishment would be classified as a BWG if it met any one of three criteria — a building with a total built-up area of 20,000 sq. metres or more, daily water consumption of 40,000 litres or more, or generation of 100 kg or more of solid waste a day.
The provision covers residential welfare associations, hotels, government and private hospitals, government and private educational institutions, IT establishments, parks, marriage halls, commercial complexes, markets, industries and other large establishments.
All eligible BWGs have been instructed to complete registration through the CPCB portal within 15 days. Appropriate action will be initiated against those who fail to register within the stipulated period, the Collector said.
BWGs have also been directed to procure colour-coded bins at their own cost and segregate waste at source into wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste and special-care waste. The segregated waste should be kept at the entrance of their premises and handed over to the sanitary workers concerned.
Where a BWG is unable to process biodegradable (wet) waste on its premises, it must comply with the provisions relating to Extended Bulk Waste Generator Responsibility (EBWGR) under Rule 10 of the 2026 Rules and obtain the prescribed EBWGR certificate or proof of compliance, wherever applicable.
The BWGs should also permit authorised officials to inspect their premises, records and waste-management facilities and furnish the required information and documents during inspection or verification.
Online registration is available on the CPCB portal. The district administration said assistance would be provided to BWGs for online registration, uploading the required information and understanding the compliance requirements under the 2026 Rules.
