Convocation ceremonies

Several colleges held their graduation ceremonies this week. Of these, the convocation programmes of three colleges under the auspices of Bharath Group of Institutions — Bharath College of Science and Management, Indian Institute of Catering Technology, and ceremony of Bharath College of Education, were organised in Thanjavur recently.

In his convocation address, Simenew Kes Kes, technical advisor to the Ethiopian Minister for Innovation and Technology, spoke about the historical ties between the Chola kingdom and Ethiopia. He advised students not to fear artificial intelligence, but to use it only as a tool and not as a substitute for human intelligence while progressing in life. Over 600 students from the three institutions received their degrees.

The importance of research and leadership among nurses was emphasised by R.Shankar Shanmugam, registrar, Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council, during the convocation day of SRM Tiruchi College of Nursing recently. In his address, Mr. Shanmugam advised graduates to continue the services in the nursing field with dedication.

Prof. G. Ravi, vice-chancellor, Alagappa University, Karaikudi, encouraged graduating teachers to be good role models for their students through their work ethic, at the convocation ceremony of Venkateswara College of Education, Pudukottai recently. Principal M. Ilangovan presented the annual report.

FDP on team spirit

A series of hands-on activities, experiential learning sessions and communication games centred on the theme of ‘team-building’ were held as part of a two-day faculty development programme (FDP) conducted by the Department of Management (B-School), Shrimati Indira Gandhi College recently. In his inaugural address, N. Sekar, MBA coordinator, emphasised the vital role of teamwork in achieving academic excellence and institutional growth. R. Saraswathy, academic director, Department of Management, guided faculty members through a variety of interactive exercises.

World Art Day celebration

Students of Jamal Mohamed College of Teacher Education, Tiruchi, showcased their talents during World Art Day celebrations for the year 2025–2026, hosted by the Da Vinci Arts Club held recently. Colourful cultural performances presented by the students, added vibrancy to the event and entertained the audience. Principal G. Chandrakumar spoke.

Placement orders

Over 400 students of A.V.C. College from the departments of Commerce, Business Administration, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, and other disciplines received job offers through campus recruitment drives conducted in this year. Appointment orders were distributed to the selected students by Justice K. Venkataraman, Judge-administrator of AVC Educational Institutions and former judge of the Madras High Court, who congratulated the students on their achievement.

IPR awareness seminar

The importance of intellectual property protection and patenting innovations were in focus at a seminar organised by Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Cell of Bharathidasan University recently. The awareness programme was conducted under the sponsorship of BECH RUSA 2.0. In his address, S.K. Balashanmugam, assistant professor and head (in-charge), Department of Law, School of Legal Studies, Central University of Tamil Nadu, elaborated on the procedures involved in patent filing, common challenges faced by researchers, and the importance of safeguarding research outcomes.

Training workshop

Students of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College of Agriculture gained exposure on emerging export markets and the production of ice cream at a training workshop conducted by the institution’s Extension Centre recently. Speaking about current trends in Indian exports, R.R. Padmanabhan, director, EXIM Academy, Chennai, said that new Free Trade Agreements with countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and European nations have opened new opportunities for Indian farmers. Instead of exporting raw grains alone, converting them into processed food products can multiply profits significantly, he said. Ilakkiya Singaravel, owner of Naturolls Live Ice Cream Cafe, delivered a session titled ‘Success Frozen in Taste’, where she explained the scientific principles and marketing strategies involved in ice cream production.

Conference on AI applications

The wide scope of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in various sectors was the focus of a conference titled ‘HUMAInity: Human Capital • Technology • Sustainability’ organised by Gnanam School of Business, Thanjavur, recently. In his inaugural address, Vinoth Kishore, HR Manager at Gigamon, India emphasised using AI as a strategic partner rather than fearing it. Key irreplaceable skills include AI literacy, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking, he added. N. Vivek, professor of practice at Great Lakes Institute of Management Chennai, highlighted real-world applications of AI, including a student-developed ERP software and bots used globally. Akanksha Jaiswal from Loyola Institute of Business Administration, who discussed the evolving role of HR in fostering employee well-being, diversity, and technological adaptability. Over 50 participants joined the conference in online and offline mode.

College signs MoU

The Departments of Biotechnology and Microbiology at J.J. College of Arts and Science recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with BioMe Live Analytical Centre, Karaikudi, to promote joint research activities, provide hands-on training opportunities for students, and facilitate knowledge exchange between academia and industry experts. The signing ceremony was attended by principal J. Parasuraman, G. Manigandan, head, Department of Biotechnology, and P. Jeevan, head, Department of Microbiology on behalf of the college, and S. Jegatheeswaran, director and R. Mangaiyarkarasi, executive director, BioMe Live Analytical Centre.
