Academics pen book
S. Sivaramakrishnan, professor and head, Department of Biotechnology, and N. D. Shrinithivihahshini, associate professor, Department of Environmental Science and Management of Bharathidasan University, have co-authored a book titled Biochar: Science, Applications, and Future Prospects for Sustainable Solutions that offers a comprehensive examination of biochar – a carbon-rich material produced through biomass pyrolysis. The book explores biochar applications in agriculture, carbon sequestration, environmental remediation, waste management, renewable energy, and urban sustainability, supported by case studies.
Book signing
Tamil poet and lyricist Vairamuthu autographed and presented copies of his latest book Valluvar Marai, Vairamuthu Urai at a special programme organised by the Umaru Pulavar Tamil Peravai of Department of Tamil, Jamal Mohamed College as part of the institution’s platinum jubilee celebrations recently. In his address, the poet advised students to study the Thirukkural and urged them to apply their values in daily life. K.M. Kader Mohideen, President, Indian Union Muslim League and a large number of literary enthusiasts attended the programme.
During the World Arabic Day observation in the college, M. Shaik Muhammad Ilyas, head Department of Arabic, Madurai MSS Waqf Board College, explained the origin of the Arabic language, and its usage as part of a special lecture programme.
MoU signed
Jamal Mohamed College signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Apex Skill Development Centre for Logistics (TNASDCL) to strengthen industry–academia collaboration in the area of logistics and skill development. TNASDCL is a Section 8, Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) functioning under a public–private partnership initiative of the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC), in consortium with the Logistics Sector Skill Council, Association of Multimodal Transport Operators of India, and TVS Supply Chain Solutions. The agreement was signed on behalf of TNASDCL by managing director Bana Bihari Nayak and A. K. Khaja Nazeemudeen, secretary and correspondent, Jamal Mohamed College. The MoU aims to enhance student employability through industry-led training programmes, internships, expert lectures, and skill-oriented initiatives.

Students of M.I.E.T Arts and Science College displayed their talents at ‘Beat Gusto’, a two-day fine arts and literary series of competitions recently. In his inaugural address, A. Prasanna, choreographer urged students to develop their talents through arts and distributed prizes to the winners. College chairman A. Mohamed Yunus, spoke.
In the festive spirit
Cauvery College for Women celebrated ‘Triple Fiesta’, a conglomeration of three religious festivals to foster communal harmony on campus recently. The December 23 programme celebrated the festivals of Christmas, Ramzan and Bakrid and Pongal in a joint ceremony. Choristers of the Department of English sang Christmas carols. Fr. Arokia Sahayaraj, Principal, Holy Cross Matriculation Higher Secondary school, Somarasampettai, delivered the Christmas message of peace and love towards all. In her address, Mehthab Nasreen, PG Assistant, Department of Chemistry, Government Higher Secondary School, Poovalur, spoke on the core values of Ramzan and Bakrid, and the importance of compassion and self–reflection. Radio jockey Hasini highlighted nature’s bounty and embracing the new year with refreshed enthusiasm during the Pongal celebration.
Innovation conference
Experts came together to discuss innovative research frontiers through technology, collaboration and methodologies during a conference organised by the Research and Development Cell and the Institution’s Innovation Council of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College recently. Periyasamy Palani, senior lecturer, School of Economics and Development Studies, IBS University, Papua New Guinea released the first copy of the conference proceedings. In her address, Durga Prasad, head of school / senior lecturer, School of Business and Management, IBS University, spoke on collaboration between academia and industry. Sangeetha Kutty, discipline lead – emerging technologies, School of Engineering and Technology, vice-president and co-founder, WinTECH Society, CQ University, Australia, highlighted the role of generative artificial intelligence in modern innovation. A total of 36 research papers were presented by participants from various institutions.
Literary flair
S. Sobana, associate professor and head, Department of English, Bishop Heber College, spoke on the dynamic role of translation as a cultural bridge and its significance in negotiating linguistic and cultural identities, as part of the Dr. G. Sundari and Dr. K. Shenbagavalli Endowment Lecture programme hosted by the PG and Research Department of English, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College (SRC) recently.
Also at SRC, women students showcased their talents at Versatalia – 2025, an intercollegiate literary competition. Poetry recitation, visual interpretation of literary texts, and short theatrical performances were among the activities of the programme.
Podcast message
Sameeruddin Khan, pro vice-chancellor, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Tiruchi, advised students on adaptability, ethical values, and lifelong learning in achieving institutional excellence during a podcast hosted by the Podcasting Club of the Department of English, SRM Tiruchi Arts and Science College recently. Mr. Khan discussed industry-relevant curriculum design, experiential learning, technology-enabled teaching, and interdisciplinary approaches to bridge the gap between academia and industry during his interaction with the host.

Farmers in focus
The benefits of natural farming were in focus as part of National Farmers’ Day (Kisan Diwas) celebrations at Mother Terasa College of Agriculture (MTCA), in Mettusalai, Iluppur, recently. As part of the celebrations, students of MTCA conducted an awareness rally in and around Mettusalai village to sensitise the public and farmers about the significance of the day. The students carried placards and raised slogans promoting sustainable agriculture, soil health conservation, and farmer welfare.
Project expo
Students from various engineering departments of Chettinad College of Engineering and Technology, Karur showcased their innovative ideas during the ‘Techno Battle 2025’ competition recently. As many as 220 projects were displayed by participants focusing on real-world applications, emerging technologies, and interdisciplinary approaches of engineering concepts. Prithish Debsharma, General Manager – IT, Chettinad Education and Services, Chennai, assessed the entries. The overall Best Project award was secured by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering.
Bodybuilding achievement (with pic)
M. Sethupathi, a third-year Computer Science student from J.J. College of Arts and Science, Pudukkottai, won the first prize in the 82 kg weight category of the inter-collegiate ‘Best Physique’ (Bodybuilding) competitions organised by Bharathidasan University recently. Following this victory, Mr. Sethupathi has been selected to represent the university in the upcoming All India Inter-University Best Physique Competition. The winner was felicitated by the college management members for his achievement.
