A case was registered against five inmates of Mangaluru District Prison on December 15 for obstructing the prison staff from checking a barrack in the prison. The prison staff found four mobile phones from the cell.
In a compliant to Barke police, Prison Superintendent Sharana Basappa said on December 15 morning he and other prison personnel when to search a cell in the ‘A’ Barrack of the prison. Undertrials Mohammed Hafeez, Ibrahim Khaleel, Mohammed Asif, Nissar Hussain and Niyaz allegedly obstructed the search by saying it cannot be done without there being a case registered against them. Hafeez even tried to overpower him, Mr. Basappa stated.
The complaint was registered for the offence punishable under Sections 189 (2), 191(2), 351(3), 132 and 190 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Barke police came to the prison to join the prison staff in searching the cell and seize four mobile phones.
Similar search was carried out in Central Prisons in Bengaluru, Mysuru and Belagavi, and in Vijayapura Prison, in the last 36 hours, where 20 mobile phones, four knives, 11 SIM cards and 366 gm of cannabis were seized , said Director-General of Prisons and Correctional Services Alok Kumar on X.
