A portion of the ceiling at the Arogyasri ward of MGM Hospital in Warangal collapsed on Sunday (September 20) injuring three patients, two attendants and two sanitation workers, according to the Telangana Junior Doctors’ Association (T-JUDA).
The incident has raised concerns over the condition of the ageing hospital infrastructure and the safety of patients, attendants and healthcare workers. JUDA members said the condition of some of the existing hospital buildings posed a risk to patients, doctors, nursing staff, sanitation workers and other personnel.
In a statement, the association called for an immediate and comprehensive inspection of the hospital buildings to identify structurally unsafe areas and undertake necessary repairs and safety measures.
They also renewed the demand for the early opening of the upcoming super-specialty hospital. “The continued dependence on the existing hospital buildings had placed an additional burden on the ageing infrastructure and was causing difficulties for patients and healthcare staff,” they added.
The association urged the government to expedite the remaining works at the new hospital and make it operational at the earliest. It said the new hospital would provide safer and improved healthcare facilities while also creating better working conditions for doctors and other healthcare workers. JUDA members have also sought immediate safety measures at the existing MGM Hospital to prevent similar incidents in the future.
