Several thousand devotees from across Yadgir district and also from neighbouring Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra witnessed the Rathotsav (chariot festival) organised as part of the annual fair of Sri Vishwaradhya Temple at Abbetumkur village on Sunday.
The priests of the temple performed special pujas to the Rath (chariot) while Peethadhipathi of the temple Sri Gangadhar Swamiji was present.
The devotees then pulled the chariot, which carried a portrait of Sri Vishwaradhya and was decked with different varieties of flowers, for a distance and brought it back to its original place. All along they raised the slogan: âVishwaradhya Maharaj Ki Jai.â
The devotees threw dry dates, bananas and coconuts on the moving chariot as part of their worship.
The annual fair is organised in honour of Sri Vishwaradhya, a great saint of the region who advocated a casteless society and Dasoha for the hungry.
Following his principles, the present Peethadhipathi is arranging for meals, both in the afternoon and night, for visiting devotees.
Devotees who came from various parts for the annual fair stayed at rooms built on the temple premises where they were provided basic needs.
Various cultural programmes, Sarvadharma Sammelan and musical concerts were organised after the Rathotsav.
The Home Department made adequate security arrangements for the smooth conduct of the annual fair.
