Chennai Metro Rail ticket prices will remain unchanged with the commencement of train operations under the phase II network, and a ride from Poonamallee to Vadapalani would cost commuters ₹40.
According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), when commuters switch trains between phase I and phase II networks and travel longer distances, the maximum fare will be capped at ₹50. For instance, those who travel from Poonamallee to areas in the north, including Wimco Nagar, Tiruvottiyur, Kaladipet, and Washermanpet, or those in the south, such as Chennai Airport, the maximum fare would be ₹50. Of this, commuters could get a 20 per cent discount on all tickets, except for the paper QR ticket, which they can purchase directly at the station counter.
After a long wait, commuters eagerly await the inauguration of the first stretch of the phase II network from Poonamallee to Vadapalani, via Porur, on October 11. For the trip from Poonamallee to Porur or from Porur to Vadapalani, commuters would spend ₹30.
The trains will cover 14.6 km, stopping at all 10 stations from Poonamallee to Porur, but for now, the next stop will be only at Vadapalani. The construction of the following stations in this stretch—Alapakkam, Karambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Alwarthirunagar, Saligramam Warehouse and Saligramam—are plagued by delays and it may take another few months to be finished.
R.K. Ravichandran, a resident of Iyyapanthangal said, travelling to his usual destinations like Vadapalani and Koyambedu is set to get a lot easier with the opening of the phase II network. “I hope Chennai Metro Rail opens the rest of the stations too at the earliest. The 14.6 km stretch is going to open after months of delay. I hope they speed up the work on the rest of the stations too,” he added.
