As many as 171 people died, and 1,213 people were injured in 1,014 road accidents reported in the City Police Commissionerate during 2025, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic), K. Ravishankar, here on Tuesday.
Speaking at the National Road Safety Month awareness programme organised by the City Police, Mr. Ravishankar said the fatalities were slightly lower compared to 2024, when 178 people had died in 1,026 accidents. The City had witnessed 167 road accident deaths and 1,013 accidents in 2023, the DCP noted.
The majority of the victims were two-wheeler riders, followed by pedestrians. Of the 171 deaths in 2025, 82 were two-wheeler riders (48%), and 67 were pedestrians (39%). Similarly, in 2024, 94 riders (53%) and 66 pedestrians (37%) were victims of the total 178 fatalities. Of the 167 deaths in 2023, 84 were riders (50%), and 58 were pedestrians (38%).
Traffic enforcement was done vigorously to ensure that there were fewer deviations and violations, the DCP said. Police had booked 1.36 lakh cases and collected ₹5.4 crore in fines in 2023, followed by 1.44 lakh cases and ₹6.65 crore in 2024, and 2.43 lakh cases and ₹9.49 crore in 2025, he said.
Mr. Ravishankar said that the traffic police have identified 16 black spots in the Commissionerate limits where 315 accidents had occurred in the last three years, resulting in the death of 77 people. Corrective actions to eliminate these black spots were being taken in coordination with stakeholders, including the Mangaluru City Corporation, Public Works Department, and the National Highways Authority of India.
The DCP urged everyone to indulge in defensive driving so as to avoid causing accidents.
