The Puducherry government has sought the intervention of Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan in implementing 25% reservation for students from the Union Territory in all courses offered by Pondicherry University.
During a meeting with the Vice-President, who visited Puducherry on Monday, Mr. Rangasamy submitted a memorandum urging his intervention as Chancellor of the university to implement the reservation in all the courses offered now and in the future.
The Chief Minister recalled that the university had extended a reservation of 25% of the seats in the available courses in 1997. He said the decision was taken after due consultation with the academic council and the executive committee.
Initially, the reservation was provided for eight courses, and subsequently, the coverage was extended to 18 academic programmes.
“However, when more professional, prestigious, and job-oriented courses were launched over time, the reservation was not extended to them. This sowed the seeds of discontent in the minds of the youth of the Union Territory,” he said.
Justifying the rationale behind the demand, the Puducherry Assembly had adopted a resolution demanding 25% reservation in all the 64 courses offered by the university. Besides, a three-member committee had recommended uniform reservation in all the courses. The academic council had accepted the recommendation in 2013-14. However, no decision had been taken on implementing the reservation, he said.
