A two-day seminar on pollution response followed by a mock drill organised by the Indian Coast Guard Headquarters No. 3 (Karnataka) ended here on Wednesday.
The event witnessed participation from various stakeholders, including afloat units under command, port authorities, and other maritime agencies.
The seminar aimed to enhance preparedness and coordination among all agencies involved in marine pollution response. Various issues related to marine pollution at sea and its impact on the marine ecosystem were highlighted.
As part of the event, a mock pollution response drill was conducted at the New Mangalore Port Authority’s jetty. The drill demonstrated a coordinated response to a simulated oil spill scenario, showcasing the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration in managing maritime environmental emergencies.
Deputy Inspector General S. K. Verghese, Officer-in-Charge, Coast Guard Pollution Response Team (West), in his opening remarks said that the protection of the sea from marine pollution required a multi-faceted approach involving preparedness and collaboration. Commander Coast Guard (Karnataka) P. K. Mishra urged industries to develop new technology for marine pollution response. He also commended the efforts of Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) in developing absorbent pads, a Coast Guard release said.
