The Coimbatore district administration has prevailed upon various government departments to gear up preparedness to tackle possible impact of northeast monsoon season, in the event of excessive rainfall.
At a recent meeting to review preparedness, District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar discussed with senior officials measures to devise a joint strategy for public safety.
The discussion covered the mechanisms for monitoring low-lying areas and areas vulnerable to flooding, and to keep ready action plans for establishing relief camps for accommodating displaced persons, equipping the locations with essential supplies and medical facilities, and responding to emergencies in high-risk zones.
Calling upon local bodies to desilt and set right stormwater drains, and to prioritise removal of fallen trees across roads to ensure uninterrupted traffic, the TWAD Board was tasked with mandatory water chlorination to prevent contamination and waterborne illnesses.
The Health Department was advised to initiate anti-dengue and mosquito control measures, and establish mobile fever camps in rain-affected pockets.
The Electricity Department was instructed to keep a watch on snapped power lines to prevent untoward incidents, and the Water Resources Department was asked to clear canal encroachments. Response measures of Fire and Rescue Services Department and Police Department were also discussed at the meeting.
