People living in Thoppil Nagar and Abirami Nagar in Ward 38 of the Coimbatore Corporation have accused the authorities of failing to restore roads in their area after carrying out underground drainage works nearly 10 months ago.

They said the roads were dug up as part of the underground drainage project but have not been paved so far. As a result, the surface remains uneven at several locations. Despite repeated complaints and issues raised with the authorities over the past several months, restoration work has not been taken up, they said.

Loose gravel from the concrete filling on the road poses risks to pedestrians and motorists. Movement of vehicles further displaces the gravel, adding to the problem, people living in the area said.

D. Radhika, a homemaker, said that she slipped while travelling on the road due to loose gravel, fell after losing grip, and sustained a hip fracture two months ago. She said she had to undergo treatment, and continues to face difficulty in movement.

Another resident, S. Priyadharshini, said that children in the area have also sustained injuries while using the damaged roads. She added that dust from the road settles inside houses, covering food and drinking water. Dust pollution increases whenever vehicles pass through the area, affecting daily life, she said.

A senior Corporation official said that funds for road re-laying in the area have been sanctioned and that the issue would be checked and addressed at the earliest.
