Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who holds the Water Resources portfolio, told the Legislative Council in Belagavi on Thursday that a committee comprising leaders from the Opposition benches will be constituted to study the plight of people displaced by various irrigation projects, including UKP (Upper Krishna Project), and make recommendations to the State government.
He was responding to the issue raised by Hanumanth Nirani and P.H. Pujar under Rule 330 in the Legislative Council on rehabilitation for UKP-displaced people.
Mr. Shivakumar said that he is committed to ensuring development of irrigation and at the same time, concerned about the people who part with their land for such projects. The State government is committed to extending all the required assistance to the project-displaced people, he said.
A committee will be formed to study the plight of these people and recommend remedial measures, he said. Senior members from the Opposition benches will be nominated to the committee to give constructive suggestions towards resolution of issues faced by displaced people, he said.
Earlier, raising the issue, Hanumanth Nirani and P.H. Pujar pointed out that only 50% of targeted land has been irrigated under the UKP and no official has visited the 146 rehabilitation centres set up for the project-displaced people.
Their plight is pitiable and the State government should take up the issue on humanitarian basis and provide proper rehabilitation and livelihood to them, they demanded.
