Road users have demanded the installation of street lights on the Mamangam flyover on Salem-Bengaluru National Highway to prevent accidents at night. One person died in a multiple-vehicle collision on the flyover at night last week.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which constructed the flyover at a cost of ₹29 crore, allowed vehicles to use it in August this year. The project involved the installation of cat eyes (road studs) and 40 lights. While the white markings on the highway were completed only last week, streetlights are yet to be installed. On the night of December 25, due to the absence of lights on the flyover, two vehicles collided with a lorry that was parked on the flyover after it had run out of fuel, resulting in a death.
P. Uma, a resident of the same locality, said that there are no signboards on the flyover. In the absence of lighting, vehicles, especially two-wheeler riders, face risks. Mist and fog also reduce visibility at night. There are also reports of a few people falling from their vehicles and sustaining injuries. The NHAI should install the lights and signboards quickly to avoid accidents, she said.
When contacted, NHAI officials said that the installation of signboards began on Sunday. The installation of 40 lights along the median and the flyover will be completed in the next 10 days. All works on the flyover will be completed before Pongal, the officials added.
