An official of the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) has filed a complaint alleging misuse of the organisation’s name and logo through fake Instagram accounts, which were reportedly created to cheat customers online.
Based on the complaint filed by Doddappa Sutagatti, marketing assistant of the corporation, the Central Division cybercrime police have registered an FIR under Section 66(c) (identity theft) of the IT Act.
According to the complaint, unidentified persons have, over the past six months, created multiple fake Instagram accounts in the name of ‘KSIC Mysore silk’ without any authorisation. These accounts allegedly uploaded copied images of products sold at the KSIC outlets and falsely projected them as official online sales platforms of the organisation.
The KSIC officials said that the accused misused the organisation’s name and logo to attract customers and collect money through online transactions, thereby cheating the public. The fraudulent activity not only posed a risk of financial loss to customers, but also damaged the reputation and credibility of the government-owned cooperative, they said.
The officials clarified that the KSIC has not authorised any Instagram page or online platform for product sales in this manner and sought strict legal action against those involved in creating and operating the fake social media accounts.
Further investigation is under way.
