The Congress has approached the State Election Commission (SEC) seeking the disqualification of its member N.K. Manju, who switched sides and became president of the Agali grama panchayat with the Left Democratic Front (LDF) support on Saturday.

The Congress has demanded that Ms. Manju, who was elected from Chinnaparamba (ward 20) of the Agali panchayat, be disqualified under the anti-defection law. The party has also decided to move legally against Ms. Manju.

Meanwhile, Ms. Manju said that she had not been given any whip by the party. She said she got votes in the panchayat president’s election irrespective of parties. While the LDF got 10 votes, the United Democratic Front (UDF) got only nine votes in the president election. Three members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stayed away from voting.

The Congress has also decided to seek explanation from its councillor Prasobh in the Palakkad municipality for his failure to vote in the vice-chairperson election. Mr. Prasobh was denied permission to vote as he reached the council five minutes late.

Mr. Prasobh said that he went home to take medicine due to illness, but the Congress leaders were unconvinced.
