Over 500 construction workers, including around 300 women, staged a demonstration in front of the Dindigul Collectorate on Tuesday urging the State government to meet various demands, including a Pongal special package with a bonus of ₹5,000.
The protest was organised by the Construction Workers Federation of India as part of a State‑wide agitation highlighting the various issues faced by the construction workers. The protesters also raised slogans and urged the Central government not to implement the new labour laws and to increase the welfare benefits for the registered workers.
Some of the key demands of the workers included payment of a ₹5,000 bonus along with the Pongal festival assistance, the enhancement of the monthly pension to ₹3,000, grant of pension to women workers from the age of 55, housing subsidy for building homes, assured medical insurance coverage, and education assistance from Class I onwards for the workers’ children.
The Construction workers said the government must act swiftly on these issues to protect the livelihood and social security of construction workers.
