The Tiruchi Corporation has allocated ₹3.18 crore for desilting major drainage canals across the city, ahead of the northeast monsoon.
In order to ensure smooth flow in the drains and prevent possible inundation, the Corporation has decided to clear the silt from major drains running to a length of about 216 km in various parts of the city.
The Srirangam Nattu Vaical and Samba Vaical, Kottai Vaical, Rettai Vaical, Kathiri Vaical, Kathan Vaical, Selva Nagar Vaical, Virupatchipuram Vaical, S.S. Nagar Vaical, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar Vaical, Poosari Street Vaical, Madhura Garden Vaical and the drainages along Venice Street, Norh Andar Street, and Butterworth Road are among the drains which are to cleared of silt, according to a corporation press release.
The exercise would be carried out using excavators for a length of about 79 km and the remaining would be carried out by men. While excavators would be used in canals with adequate width, the silt would be cleared from narrow canals manually.
The Corporation was taking steps to prevent rainwater stagnation and gearing up to handle exigencies. Two heavy duty motor pumpsets have been kept ready in each of the five zones in the Corporation for pumping out water from low lying areas. Chainsaws have also been kept ready for use in case of trees being uprooted.
The Corporation Commissioner has instructed officials to complete all the precautionary measures ahead of the onset of the monsoon, the release added.
