The mass defection of the Congress members in Mattathur in Thrissur to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP) front is a premeditated and well-planned move carried out with the full knowledge of the Congress leadership, alleged K. V. Abdul Khader, secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] Thrissur District Committee.

“Eight Congress representatives did not hesitate to betray even the voters who elected them, choosing instead to align with the BJP’s communal politics. What has unfolded in the district is merely a new version of the unholy alliances earlier witnessed in Vadakara and Beypore. The so-called suspension action taken against those involved is nothing more than an attempt to throw dust in the eyes of the public,” he said.

In the Paralam panchayat, where the Congress and the BJP had equal strength, the Congress handed over power to the BJP by deliberately invalidating its own vote. No matter how much justification is offered, this episode once again exposes how real and deep the Congress–BJP undercurrent truly is, he alleged.

SDPI’s support

In Chovannur too, the Congress showed no hesitation in securing the president’s post with the support of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) votes. This has triggered strong criticism, even from within the party’s own ranks.

The Congress party’s collaboration with communal and fascist forces will ultimately erode its own political base. A strong and united mass movement will be raised against this communal nexus of the Congress, Mr. Khader added.
