The Coimbatore district committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) held a demonstration at the Coimbatore Corporation’s main office complex on Tuesday, urging the civic body to address the unresolved problems in the city. A petition listing the demands was submitted to the Corporation Commissioner.

The party said roads dug up for the underground drainage project were in a bad condition across the city, causing repeated accidents, and urged the Corporation to repair them immediately. It said funds had not been allocated for stormwater drains for the past four years, and wanted drains to be built wherever needed. It also said works proposed in the 2026 Budget had not received administrative sanction or tenders following the change of government, and demanded that the announced works be started without delay.

Among its other demands were drinking water connections for Scheduled Caste households on payment of only the water charges, upgrading the Gandhipuram central bus stand, and early completion and opening of the Vellalore integrated bus terminus.

It urged the Corporation to maintain parks with the cooperation of residents, increase the number of sanitary workers and regularise their services. The party also sought desilting of drains before the northeast monsoon and repair of non-functional streetlights.
