The Tiruchi City Crime Branch (CCB) on Thursday arrested N. Ramkumar, a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) functionary, in connection with the alleged case of cheating and land fraud involving a piece of land belonging to the Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy temple during 2022-2023.
The arrest of Ramkumar comes after the CCB booked a case against him and five others, including the then Sub-Registrar of Srirangam on September 13, under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code acting on a complaint lodged by the temple’s Joint Commissioner/Executive Officer S. Sivaramkumar.
Ramkumar and the other accused allegedly entered into a criminal conspiracy to commit the crime which led to the temple land being registered illegally in the name of Ramkumar, who is the DMK’s Srirangam area secretary, by using forged documents.
The extent of the temple land, said to be valued at over ₹50 crore, illegally registered in the name of Ramkumar was over 7,000 sq. ft. in Srirangam. Four private individuals who claimed to own the land had registered it illegally in the name of Ramkumar using forged documents. The amount received in the alleged land transfer was over ₹2 crore. Police sources said the CCB team headed by an Inspector arrested Ramkumar on Thursday in connection with the alleged land fraud case. Further investigations are under way.
