Boominathan, 45, of A.T. Nagar, North Kumbaram, died of injuries at Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital on Sunday after being assaulted by his wife during a domestic altercation.
According to police, Boominathan and his wife Revathi, 35, had been married for 16 years and had two daughters. Following financial setbacks abroad and business losses incurred while running a palm leaf-stalk mill, Boominathan allegedly became addicted to alcohol and frequently quarrelled with his wife.
The couple had earlier separated. In April, an argument broke out after Boominathan pressured Revathi to return home and allegedly attacked her leg with a weapon. A case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, leading to Boominathan’s arrest and subsequent release on bail two months ago.
Police said the couple continued to argue. On Monday, around 6 a.m., another confrontation took place between the two at their residence. During the altercation, Revathi allegedly struck him with a wooden log. Boominathan reportedly lay incapacitated for a prolonged period before Revathi herself called a 108 ambulance and admitted him to the hospital, where he eventually died.
Police registered a case and arrested his wife, who was granted bail.
In another incident, a 25-year-old man was stabbed to death at Mandalamanickam village over a long-standing feud originating from a Kabaddi tournament held two years ago.
Police identified the victim as Sakthivel Pandi. According to the police, a verbal altercation broke out between Sakthivel Pandi and three local residents, Murugan, 55, and his sons Shanmugavel, 25, and Sivakumar, 23, all belonging to the same community.
The argument escalated into a physical attack, and Sakthivel Pandi was stabbed to death with a knife. The victim’s body was taken to Kamudhi Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police arrested Muruhan and his sons.
