Madurai City Police have witnessed a significant decline in the number of grave crime cases like murder, attempt to murder and robbery, during 2025 when compared to that of 2024.
While the number of murders has come down by 43%, the number of robbery cases has drastically dropped by 74%.
Madurai City Commissioner of Police J. Loganathan attributed the success in reduction of crime rate to proper patrolling of the city and preventive efforts taken by the city police.
“We have kept a tab on the activities of history-sheeters and closely monitored the movement of suspected criminals,” he said.
The City police had used 63 two-wheeler patrol vehicles and 21 four-wheeler patrol vehicles to roam around the city. Besides, each range had a delta vehicle and seven Pink patrol vehicles to take care of women and children safety.
The round-the-clock operation of Eagle vehicles to regulate traffic helped the police to contain the activities of anti-social elements, rowdies and trouble mongers, he added.
Over and above, the 17 border checkposts were also kept active 24X7 to keep a tab on movement of suspicious persons.
Besides the special efforts of the Serious Crime Squad to contain the activities of rowdy elements, detention of 87 criminal elements and ganja peddlers under Goondas Act helped to reduce murder cases from 37 in 2024 to 21 in 2025 and attempt to murder cases from 67 in 2024 to 28 in 2025.
Similarly, the number of cases of grievous hurt has been reduced by 43%.
Expeditious execution of arrest warrants issued by the courts resulted in 25 history-sheeters getting more than 10 years jail in 11 cases.
A total of ₹3.93 crore worth crime properties were recovered and handed over to the owners through courts in 2025, the Commissioner said.
