Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized about 5.832 kg of gold, worth about ₹8.98 crore, from a car near Visakhapatnam.

Acting on specific intelligence, the DRI team intercepted a car travelling from Kolkata to Hyderabad on Friday (October 9, 2026) and seized the yellow metal — 24-carat gold of foreign origin.

The gold was smuggled through the India-Bangladesh border and was being transported to Hyderabad, DRI officials said in a release on Sunday (October 11, 2026). The accused had concealed the gold biscuits in a cabin created for smuggling, beneath the leg space of the front co-passenger seat in the car, the officials said.

The two persons smuggling the gold have been arrested. The accused were produced in court and remanded to judicial custody.

The gold was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and a detailed investigation is on. DRI officers are trying to determine the origin and destination of the seized gold, and the kingpin of the racket.
