A dry water channel at Ganapathi Nagar near Palayapalayam has turned into an open dumping ground, with a large quantity of plastic waste and other garbage being dumped along its stretch.

The channel, which previously carried water, has remained dry for several years, reportedly owing to encroachments that have obstructed its course. The dry channel and its banks are now being used for the indiscriminate dumping of waste. Most of the waste is reportedly being dumped by residents in the locality.

A considerable quantity of plastic waste has accumulated along the roadside, posing a threat to the environment. The dumping of plastic and other waste could also obstruct the flow of rainwater through the channel during the monsoon, increasing the possibility of water stagnation in the surrounding areas. With plastic waste lying exposed, there is a possibility of the garbage being washed into the channel and nearby areas during heavy rain.

Road users have urged the Corporation to remove the accumulated waste and clear the encroachments that have affected the channel. They also sought steps to restore the water channel and prevent further dumping of garbage along the stretch.

They said regular monitoring and proper waste disposal measures were necessary to keep the area clean and protect the channel from further deterioration.
