Virudhunagar district unit of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption has registered 12 cases, including trap cases, surprise checks, on irregularities and amassing of wealth by government officials in 2025.
The sleuths have seized a sum of ₹16.62 lakh bribe money during the trap cases and further investigations are under way.
In a statement, its Additional Superintendent of Police, K. Ramachandran, said that six cases were registered against government officials for demanding and accepting bribe from the members of public. The officials laid trap and eight persons, including village administrative officers, village assistants, Sub-Registrar in Cooperative Department, Assistant Engineer in TNEB and Junior Engineer in Panchayat Union, were caught red-handed while accepting bribes.
They were arrested and bribe money of ₹ 1.03 lakh was seized from them. Besides, ₹ 8 lakh suspected bribe money was seized during searches conducted in their houses, the statement said.
Joint surprise checks were conducted in three government offices in the presence of Deputy Inspection Cell Officer based on intelligence input that government and public sector employees were demanding bribes for discharging their official duties, the statement added.
A sum of ₹7.59 lakh suspected bribe money was seized and three cases were registered against officials, including a Deputy Tahsildar, a Sub-Registrar and officials from the Department of Fire and Rescue Services.
Based on information from the members of public about amassing of wealth by government officials, three cases were registered against Assistant Director, Mines, an assistant in municipal office and secretary of a village panchayat. Further investigations are under way.
The DVAC has filed final reports in 12 cases in the special court for Prevention of Corruption Act cases against 55 persons.
The Special Court has convicted seven persons, including government officials and private persons in four corruption cases.
The ADSP said that Virudhunagar district unit has registered 54 cases, including 29 trap cases, nine surprise checks, nine cases for irregularities and seven cases of disproportionate asset cases in the last five years. A total of ₹42.72 lakh bribe and suspected bribe money was seized.
A total of 24 persons involved in 12 cases were convicted by the special court, the statement added.
Advising the people not to pay bribe to government officials, the statement said that if any government official demanded bribe in cash or kind, directly or indirectly, or through agents, complaints or information could be given in person to the DVAC office located on the Collectorate premises.
