A 70-year-old man from C.R. Colony in Karadikulam was killed after being trapped under the wheels of a temple car, during the car festival of Kazhugasalamoorthy Temple in Kazhugumalai, on Sunday.
Police said, the deceased had been identified as S. Chappanimuthu, a worker at matchbox industry in the locality. It was his usual practice to assist during the annual car festival by placing wooden blocks under the wheels of temple car.
During the procession, when the temple car reached the Keela Bazar area, Chappanimuthu attempted to place a wooden block under the rear wheel on the left side. However , he unexpectedly got caught under the wheel and died on the spot.
Kazhugumalai police personnel, who were on security duty at the venue, recovered the body and sent it for post mortem examination at the government hospital in Kovilpatti.
A case has been registered at Kazhugumalai police station. Further investigations are under way.
