The construction of the new Water Metro terminal near the Ernakulam Boat Jetty is expected to be completed in a year. The terminal, costing ₹32 crore, will be the second-largest in the Water Metro network after the High Court terminal, according to an official communication.
Once it becomes operational, direct services can be operated from the terminal to Mattancherry, Fort Kochi, Kumbalam, and Edakochi. The piling work commenced on September 8. The facility, which will be designed in the traditional Kerala architectural style, will have two floors and a total area of 18,000 square feet, according to the communication.
The first floor will be dedicated to commercial purposes. Piling work is being carried out round the clock. Two floating jetties are envisaged as part of the project, and one of them will be completed in the first phase. Charging points for boats and a fueling station will also be set up. The tender procedures for 15 new boats are under way.
Meanwhile, the tender process for the Edakochi and Varapuzha terminals is nearing completion. The estimated costs of the Edakochi and Varapuzha terminals are ₹20 crore and ₹16 crore, respectively, according to the communication.
