Every police station in Bihar to have a Child Help Desk from Oct. 2

The Samrat Choudhary-led government of Bihar has decided to establish Child Help Desks (also calleed Child Corners) in all 1,377 police stations and outposts (OPs) to curb crime against children in the State. 

The Police Headquarters (PHQ) has issued directives to the Superintendents of Police of all districts in this regard on Thursday (September 17, 2026).

The Child Help Desks or Child Corners will be established in every police station across the State on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2. All concerned districts have been instructed to submit compliance reports to the Weaker Section wing of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) by October 5.

The objective

The objective is not only to curb the increasing number of crimes against children, but also to provide them with a dedicated space where they can openly discuss any problems at the police station, the directives said.

Children will also be provided information about laws relating to them, including provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act through these desks. Besides, the desks are being established in every police station to provide children with a safe and child-friendly environment.

The initiative is being undertaken in accordance with Section 8(5) of the Bihar Police Act, 2007, and the guidelines issued by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

CWPOs to operate the desks

As per the directives, the Child Help Desk will be established at a location within the police station premises that is clearly visible to visitors from outside. It will be kept completely separate from the lock-up. The area will be designed to be child-friendly and will have a distinct appearance from the rest of the police station.

The desk will operate under the leadership of the Child Welfare Police Officer (CWPO) of the police station. The name, designation and mobile number of the CWPO, along with the name and mobile number of the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), will be clearly displayed at each centre.

Efficient and trained female police personnel will be deployed at all police stations to address problems relating to girls and to communicate with them.

The displayed mobile numbers will be kept active at all times to ensure immediate action on complaints or requests for assistance received from children and their parents or guardians. Complaints will be resolved within a stipulated time-frame and complete details regarding their disposal will be recorded in a register.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) rank officials to monitor desks

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) rank officials will continuously monitor the Child Help Desks. In addition, the Special Crime-cum-In-Charge of the Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU) and other senior district-level officers will also supervise them.

The objective of the monitoring is to ensure sensitivity and effective policing in matters concerning children. Regular supervision will be carried out, and proper records will be maintained.
