Farmers on Saturday celebrated the anniversary of the first water release from the Mullaperiyar dam. They paid tributes to British engineer Colonel John Pennycuick, the architect of the Mullaperiyar dam.
Water was first released from the dam to the region in Tamil Nadu on October 10, 1895. Farmers gathered at the Pennycuick Memorial at the Lower Camp in Theni district and paid their respects by offering floral tributes and garlanding the statue of Colonel Pennycuick. They also offered flowers to the river and distributed sweets to the public and the tourists.
