Farmers in Coimbatore-Tiruppur belt to intensify campaign for Noyyal river remediation by the next government

Farmers dependent on Noyyal river in the region are looking forward to accelerating their campaign for securing the commitment of the next government for its remediation.

A major tributary of the Cauvery river, the condition of the Noyyal passing through Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode and Karur districts to a stretch of 158 km has turned worse due to the contamination caused by release of untreated wastes by industries, hospitals, and local bodies alike, K.S. Thirugnanasambandan, chief coordinator of Tamilaga Vivasayigal Pathukappu Sangam, said.

There is entirely no attention on the river that once had 32 tank irrigation structures created during the Chola period, and was mentioned in ancient Tamil literature as ‘Kanchimanadi’.
