Condemning the delay in capturing two leopards sighted at the Marayeepalayam hillock in the Bhavanisagar block, farmers and residents have decided to launch a protest.
The leopards, spotted on the hillock, have created fear among villagers, who alerted the Forest Department. Following this, three cages were installed with goats as bait. However, the animals are yet to be trapped, and residents claim the leopards appear to have become accustomed to the cages.
With panic prevailing among farmers and the general public in the surrounding villages, a consultative meeting was held on Sunday at Periya Kallipatti. The meeting was attended by local residents, farmers, and office-bearers of farmers’ associations. More than 100 people from Indira Nagar, Malliyampatti, Periya Kallipatti, and Nathegoundenpudur participated.
During the meeting, it was unanimously decided to organise a protest to press for immediate action. As a first step, the farmers resolved to submit a petition to the Sathyamangalam District Forest Officer on Wednesday. The course of further protests will be decided at a subsequent meeting, participants said.
