With a 50-year-old farmer from the Thalavadi Hills sustaining severe injuries in a wild elephant attack and undergoing treatment at a hospital in Karnataka, the Thalavadi Farmers Association has urged the State government to provide ₹5 lakh as relief assistance to the victim.
In an email addressed to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, association president S. Kannaiyan said that the tribal farmer, Aalmadhan of Solagar Dhoddi, was attacked by the elephant while returning home from his farmland on December 13. He sustained serious injuries to the head, internal organs, lungs, heart, bones, and urinary system.
The victim was initially admitted to the Chamarajanagar Institute of Medical Sciences and is currently undergoing treatment at the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute.
The association urged the Chief Minister to consider the poor financial condition of the victim’s family and provide ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund. The letter pointed out that existing welfare schemes provide compensation of only up to ₹59,000 for injuries, which is grossly inadequate for severely affected tribal families.
The association also appealed to the government to adopt a more humane and enhanced compensation policy for human–wildlife conflict cases, proposing ₹5 lakh for severe injuries, ₹2 lakh for partial injuries, and ₹20 lakh in the event of loss of life.
It further emphasised that victims of human–wildlife conflict suffer not only physical injuries, but also severe psychological trauma, and urged the Chief Minister to urgently examine the demands and issue appropriate orders.
